Allendale Elementary Lights On After School running program scores medals
May 11, 2012, Lakewood CO ~ Arvada’s Allendale Elementary STEP (Success Through Exercising Program)won medals and prizes at a recent Kids Running America race in Denver’s City Park. Students had to run a marathon over time at their school, and then ran their final mile at the park. They also enjoyed the festivities, which included games, give-aways, and meeting the Denver Nuggets mascot.
Allendale received a Lights On After School (LOAS) grant from The Jefferson Foundation for the past two years to provide the STEP club to its students. In the 2011-2012 school year, Allendale’s program team: Brandi Flannery; Eileen Conroy; Jennifer Michaelson (principal) and Allendale teachers, broadened the project to include a variety of activities to engage her students.
“Research indicates that to build attention span, promote reasoning and problem solving, we should give kids tasks that require focused attention,” said the STEP team.. “Beside our running activity, we brought in community members and craftsmen, who introduced our kids to journaling, dance, drumming, craft projects, healthy eating and nutrition. It has been a great success at Allendale.”
“It was exciting to see our $8,000 LOAS grant being used so effectively at Allendale,” said Anton Delgado, Director of Marketing for The Jefferson Foundation. “Their students not only participated in a fun physical activity, but also had experiences to increase their mental stamina. Great job, Allendale!.”

The Jefferson Foundation provides art classroom grants to Jeffco teachers
May 8, 2012, Lakewood CO ~ The 2012 Jefferson Foundation student art shows demonstrated once again the creativity in Jeffco Public Schools and the resourcefulness of school art teachers.

A Jefferson Foundation donor was equally impressed by the student work at the Foundation’s elementary art show. As a retired Jeffco teacher, the donor was aware that most of a school’s budget is directed toward academics and student achievement and with the additional budget cuts, there is little left for the arts.
In appreciation and encouragement to Jeffco art teachers, he presented a $250 art supply grant to Jenni Halsted at Fletcher Miller School and a $250 art supply grant to Jenny Mulvey, art teacher at Dutch Creek Elementary.
Some of Halsted’s students are especially challenged and some visually impaired. She will use her grant to purchase art materials that have a tactile quality and provide her classes with an extra sensory dimension when assembling their work.
“I am very excited that The Jefferson Foundation has purchased a work by one of Ms.Halsted’s Fletcher-Miller students,” said Anton Delgado, Director of Marketing for The Jefferson Foundation. “Her student, Jeni, is visually impaired. She drew a zebra by touching and feeling a stuffed toy zebra. It is a remarkable drawing and her parents are donating the purchase award to Fletcher Miller for additional art supplies.”
Mulley said that the surprise donation was such a highlight for her at Dutch Creek. “You have put a smile on my face! I have ordered drawing and origami books, and much needed clay tools with your kind donation.”

Lights On After School program in Jeffco Public Schools celebrates successes, marks completion of its fifth and final year
May 3, 2012, Lakewood, CO —A final community celebration marking the conclusion of the five-year Lights On After School (LOAS) program in Jeffco Public Schools is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 11 at Jefferson High School (2305 Pierce Street, Edgewater, CO 80214).
Since the 2007-2008 school year, Mile High United Way, The Jefferson Foundation and funding partners Lockheed Martin, Schomp Automotive and the Salazar Family Foundation
have provided more than $1.2 million for quality after school programs in more than 30 Jeffco Public Schools. About 7,000 individual elementary, middle and high school students have participated in the programs over the last five years.
“Our LOAS programs have been free, quality afterschool programs that have keep children engaged in school and have expanded their learning potential in safe environments,” said Katie Tiernan, executive director of The Jefferson Foundation.

“The data from our program evaluations show that students who participated in after school programs at their school felt safer, felt that a sense of belonging in their school community and had more positive adult role models than did students who didn’t come to after school programs. Our regular participants also had better attendance and behavior during the regular school day than their peers.”
The LOAS Year-End Celebration will featured student displays and live
performances from the Jeffco schools that participated in the 2011-2012 school year.
