Educator Funds: Ruthie’s Fund Colorado Writing Project (CWP) Scholarships

Ruthie

Ruthie's Fund for Teachers provides small grants to projects that provide professional development for Jeffco Schools educators, so that they have the chance to become better at what they do.  The Fund was established by her family in 2007 to honor Ruth Raife McKellar, a Jeffco Public Schools kindergarten teacher, and to emulate her lifelong generosity and respect for teachers.  The fund supports professional development for teachers that will make a difference for children.

Deadline: Application deadline is 4 p.m., May 30, 2012.

Please check back after January 2013 for Ruthie's Fund Scholarships for Summer 2013.

About the scholarship:  The Ruthie’s Fund scholarship amount is $250 to be applied towards tuition for a Colorado Writing Project summer workshop.  This covers half of current tuition costs and does not apply towards other course expenses (books; optional graduate credit).  Teachers are responsible for remaining tuition and course expenses. [Note: Schools and districts frequently support teacher professional development; teachers should contact their administrators and associations for supplementary funding.]

Who may apply:  Full-time K-12 teacher employees of Jefferson County R-1 public schools.  Teachers should have as one of their current or anticipated assignments the teaching of writing.

Scholarship recipients may sign up for any of the CWP 2011 summer workshops.  CWP often conducts at least one workshop session at a Jefferson County location.  Site and registration information is online at: www.coloradowritingproject.org/id16.html.

Applying as a team:  Teachers are encouraged to apply with a teaching colleague(s) from the same school or department.  One of the stated goals of the CWP course is to “transform” participants as teachers of writing.  A culminating activity of the course is to plan for how to implement writing instruction that nurtures enthusiastic, capable, confident student writers. Having a partner or team of colleagues working towards the same goal helps to keep everyone energized and results in deeper, sustained changes in teaching practices.

Each team member should fill out a separate application.  Be sure to include other team member’s names on each application.  Teams (2 or more teachers from the same school/department) will be given preference in granting scholarships, although individuals may receive funding.

About the Colorado Writing Project:  CWP has been a positive presence in professional development in Colorado since the early 1980’s.  Their course model is grounded in the belief that teachers of writing must also write themselves.  CWP summer workshops immerse teachers in the current literature about best practices in writing instruction, while also giving them the chance to be part of a writer’s workshop.  More information at website: www.coloradowritingproject.org.
